First 4th Gen Nuclear Plant Commercial Operation

China's National Science and Technology Major Projects with Fully Independent Intellectual Property Rights; — The Huaneng Shidao Bay High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor Nuclear Power Plant Demonstration Project was put into commercial operation on the 6th, becoming the world's first nuclear power plant to achieve commercial operation of modular fourth generation nuclear power technology. This marks China's global leadership in the field of high-temperature gas cooled reactor nuclear power technology and is of great significance for promoting China's high-level technological self-reliance and building an energy powerhouse.
High temperature gas cooled reactors are internationally recognized as advanced fourth generation nuclear power technology and an important direction for the future development of nuclear power in the world. In the absence of any intervention measures, the reactor can maintain a safe state without any core meltdown or radioactive material leakage, without losing all cooling capacity. This demonstration project is the world's first ball bed modular high-temperature gas cooled reactor project, located in Rongcheng City, Shandong Province. It is led by China Huaneng and jointly constructed by Tsinghua University and China National Nuclear Corporation. It was included in the National Science and Technology Major Project in 2006 and started construction in 2012. China Huaneng has concentrated its advantageous resources in the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain, jointly carried out key technology research and core equipment development, and developed more than 2200 sets of the world's first equipment, with a localization rate of 93.4%.
