Bill Gates Nuclear Partners with UAE

By Bill&Middot; TerraPower LLC, an advanced nuclear reactor company founded by Gates, and ENEC, a state-owned nuclear energy company in the United Arab Emirates, jointly announced on Monday (December 4th) that they have agreed to jointly research advanced reactors.

On the occasion of the signing of the memorandum of understanding by both sides, the United Nations Climate Summit COP28 is being held in Dubai, where more than 20 countries have pledged to double their deployment of nuclear energy in the next decade to address climate change. The United Arab Emirates is also striving to expand its nuclear energy capabilities.

During the signing ceremony, Mohamed Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC, stated; For the UAE, we are looking for a clean electronic and molecular future that will become a reality through advanced reactors. ”

TerraPower President and CEO Chris Levesque said, '; Bringing advanced nuclear technology to the market is crucial for achieving global decarbonization goals. ”

New nuclear energy technology

TerraPower is a nuclear innovation company that is developing and promoting small modular reactor designs. This is precisely where its advancement lies, as the hope for the next generation of nuclear reactor technology largely lies in small nuclear reactors.

As the name suggests, small nuclear reactors are smaller, cheaper to build, and faster to construct than traditional reactors because they adopt modular structural design, and not every component of the reactor needs to be customized.

This type of nuclear power plant is seen by some as an important supplement to intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar power, and therefore this type of energy is rapidly developing.

Currently, TerraPower is conducting an advanced Natrium reactor demonstration project in Wyoming, USA, with the aim of going online by 2030.

Currently, the United Arab Emirates only has one traditional nuclear power plant near Abu Dhabi, which began generating electricity in 2020.

The memorandum of understanding between TerraPower and the United Arab Emirates states that they will explore the use of advanced nuclear reactors, such as storing electricity on the grid, providing the energy needed to produce hydrogen, and decarbonizing coal, steel, and aluminum plants.

However, a potential obstacle is that TerraPower's Natrium reactor requires a fuel called Highly Enriched Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU), and there are concerns about its sustainable supply.
